BURRIS STREAK REACHES A DOZEN
YEARS
Muncie Burris just seems to have everyone’s
number in Class 2A and, unfortunately for them, no one knows better than
Brownstown Central.
For the 12th straight
year, top-ranked Burris (36-4) claimed the 2A state championship trophy
defeating Brownstown Central, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20, at Ball State’s Worthen Arena. It was the seventh time during that stretch the
two teams met up in the final including a repeat of last year.
It was the Owls’ 20th
volleyball state title overall and marked their 82nd straight
tournament victory during the 12-year run.
As a team, Muncie Burris hit .291
for the match including .367 in the second game. Taylor Unroe
tallied 17 kills and Taylor Morey added 15 for the match. Both tied on the
defensive end with 13 digs each while Kelsey Carr earned 11. Mia Tabberson was credited with 39 assists.
Brownstown Central (29-8) was led
offensively by Katelyn Shoemaker with eight kills and Emily Sommers
with seven. Megan Wesner dug out 11 balls on the
defensive side and Sammie Bane totaled 23 assists.
Coached by Steve Shondell,
Burris advanced to the afternoon championship match via a 25-16, 25-19, 25-17
triumph over Fairfield. Brownstown Central, coached by Jennifer Shade, took a 25-17,
25-15, 25-23 decision from Southwood in the other
semifinal match.
